Increasing the UK‘s Submarine Build Capacity and Capability

Sector
Contract Value
The programme is valued at c£10bn with a strategic aim of the delivery of infrastructure, capability, people and skills to support the Government stated goal of delivering 12 UK Nuclear Attack Submarines. This is expected within a given production window at a delivery drumbeat of 18 months for UK submarines and and a greater delivery rate for the reactors to feed both the UK and Australian build programmes.
Throughout the project we are working collaboratively with the Submarine Delivery Agency and its primary industry partners, BAE Systems Submarines and Rolls-Royce Submarines. Our work also includes working with 60% of the supply chain who will deliver into Australia, as well as the UK.

The Magnitude of Change:

The assignment was broad ranging in terms of scope, skills and tools. Initial focus areas included creating an independent production model, conduct of manufacturing and supply chain assessments as well as reviewing deliverability of industry plans for transformation.
Having identified a number of areas for improvement the assignment moved to focus on conduct of sprints to iterate the solution and explore more novel solution options.
Given the profile and strategic nature of the project, our work included engaging with senior stakeholders including Chief Defence Nuclear (4*), Secretary of State for Defence, the Prime Minister’s Representative for AUKUS and providing evidence for the National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority (NISTA) Gate Review. There was also routine engagement at 1* and 2* level.
Key outcomes to date include the re-positioning the Submarine Delivery Agency as a stronger intelligent client whilst also influencing the industry to offer more robust and better underpinned solutions, which resulted in accelerating the release of funding for delivery.
